Bethune Cookman University Naproxen Drug Discovery Paper

Description

Introduction to Drug Discovery
Term Paper Rubric
The goal of this term paper is to have you use the concepts and tools that we discussed
throughout the course of this semester to examine a drug (or drug candidate) of your choosing to
see how it was discovered and track it all the way through its approval (or as close to approval as
you can get). Ultimately, you should be able to do this in approximately 5 pages. There is no
formal word count, but be sure to include the items listed below with all appropriate
citations/references as appropriate.
One item I will definitely be looking for is what you can find about your drug’s ADME/PK. I
think you would find it easiest to create a table that covers as much of this as possible and
ensures that you don’t forget it.
I will grade each paper looking for the following correct aspects for the drug:
Structure
Name (marketed generic)
Target/Therapeutic Area
How it was discovered
Its lead optimization
Physicochemical Characteristics (e.g. Lipinski properties) – another place where a table would
be useful
Issues overcome to gain approval
CMC/Supply Chow is it made?)
Clinical Trials (when was it approved?)
Post approval analysis
An electronic version of these reports must be emailed to me by 5 pm on Monday, December 6.
You will also be required to have your paper run through a Turnitin plagiarism check. You are
certainly allowed to submit your papers prior to December 6, but neither Jamie nor I will be
reading drafts of your paper prior to that date.
I would encourage you to not wait until the last second to do your research!
