Homework #01
Excel: Formulas
Template
Download the file CE101_F21_HW-01_Template.xlsx from Canvas.
On each worksheet, please add where indicated: (1) your first and last name;(2) the term;
(3) the year.
Exercise #1
For a simply supported beam subject to a uniform distributed load, a formula has been
developed to predict the deflection at any point in the beam. Note the diagram and associated
formula:

v
Beam deflection, (in)
q

L
Beam length, (ft)
The dependent variable in this equation is v, and the independent variable is x with constant
variables q, E, I, and L. Your objective is to calculate v as a function of x while allowing for the
other variables to be changed.
Lab steps for this equation:
1.
Format the worksheet as shown in Figure 1.
2.
To complete the lab, use the following values.
Variable
Distributed load, q
Distance along beam, x
Incremental Distance along beam, z
Young’s Modulus, E
Moment of Inertia, I
Beam length, L

Updated: Sep. 04, 2021
In the column, Deflection in Beam v (in), create the formula that will correctly calculate
beam defection at each specified point along the beam.
5.
Graph the results using the format shown in Figure 2. Note, Figure 2 contains the correct
results to compare your results to.

Exercise #2
In this exercise, you will use the Sine and Cosine Excel library functions. In addition to these two
functions, the Radian function may also be used.
Lab steps for this exercise:
1.
Format the worksheet as shown in Figure 3.
2.
The spreadsheet should be set up so the amplitude input, the value in cell B8, MUST be
a “named” cell.
3.
The angle θ in Column A ranges from 0o to 360o in increments of 10o.
4.
Type the equation A∙Sinθ in Column B.
5.
Type the equation A∙Cosθ in Column C.
6.

Exercise #3
On the template, the worksheet titled “Ex03” contains simulated monthly pumping data,
referred to as exports, from the Tracy Pumping Plant in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The
data is the amount of water pumped from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta into the DeltaMendota Canal, primarily for irrigation purposes, for each month from 1922 to 1990.
Using the library functions AVERAGE, MAX, and MIN, recreate Figure 5. In Column N, the
AVERAGE function should use standard Excel notation for the arguments. In Rows 79 through
81, the AVERAGE, MAX, and MIN functions MUST use named ranges that correspond to the
month in question. Note that in the picture, the years 1922 to 1967 are not visible—the Freeze
Pane view is used. Your worksheet should also use the Freeze Pane view.
Submission Instructions
The Excel file should be named (where FI stands for first initial of your first name):
LastName-FI_HW-01.xlsx
An example with my name
Alderete-D_HW-01.xlsx
Submit via Canvas on the time indicated.
