Creativity And Innovation By Chethiya Udawatte

Developing creativity through daily blogging

Blogging has been one of my favorite pastimes since the last three years. Continuing blogging each and every day has helped me to develop my creative side. My school life was a bit rustic as I never managed to score high in exams. Reading in a reputed missionary school and failing to achieve standard results was very disappointing. My parents never scolded me on my performance as I made up for this poor performance with my creative side. I was perhaps the best artist in the school when it came to drawings and creating different handmade creative items. I received quite a number of different prizes both from my school as well as from other institutions.

As I write my blog I remember one of the best lessons learnt in my life from one of the teacher in our school. He told us to find different unknown lines that are present in the air and combine them to form creative masterpieces. Another important thing that should never be forgotten is the fact that practice helps to improve the creativity. The more the practice, more is the creative power of the person. Even I have witnessed this phenomenon. A long spell of practice helps to gain new ideas that were unknown.

Creativity is such a power that a person can search for inspiration in every field of life starting from his eating habits to his living habits. I feared a lot when I started writing as I was really afraid of how people would take it. It created a fear in my mind when I thought that people would challenge my writing and criticize me. But my creative powers helped me to avoid such fears as I gradually got myself accustomed to such negatives.

Again coming back to creativity, it is the power of a person that helps him to stand apart from the rest of the population. It has immense value to the mankind as people are always in search of new ideas. The discovery of the post and telegraph system changed the whole world, communication which was once dependent on letters were made much easier. The creative persons however did not stopped here and searched for easier process of communication and this is how they discovered mobiles. Here lie the actual benefits of creativity as we are not satisfied with anything and are always demanding more challenging technologies to replace the existing (Nijstad, Baas and Gevers, 2015). The world is a strange place where change is necessary thus creativity cannot be neglected anyway.

I have faced a number of problems in my quest of attaining the highest level of creativity. These problems always demoralize people and build a negative insight towards creativity. An example on the following can easily solve the query. I was planning to build a house and thus ordered a pile of bricks. The vendor was unable to locate the proper spot and delivered the bricks at a place far apart from the planned site of the house. This ensured a number of problems as i had to incur extra cost to fix people to carry on the bricks to the site and also there were problems as the laborers were unable to carry a large amount of bricks. Therefore the process in which the house was build was affected. A number of internal and external factors acts as a constraint to innovation. Internal factors which affected me were lack of confidence, getting tired, less expectations, lack of motivation, lack of financial resources. While the external factors includes being criticized, and feeling distracted.

Lessons learned in school and the value of practice

Perturbing Thoughts means thinking more deeply and thinking in a way that is quite different from the regular thinking. The concept of such a thought is to think more broadly and try to concentrate on a number of different goals apart from the one that has been once the aim of the person. Thinking the other way helps the individual to enjoy the moment (Dawson and Constantine, 2014). People always try to think about a certain aim of life and thus fail to enjoy the different phases that life passes through. If one follows the new ideas it will help the person to relax and try new things that may sound a little strange. The strange ideas which were once unacceptable can now be tried in life to make sure that the different problems in life are met with new prospective and thus opening up the roads to see the other side of the coin (Nijstad, Baas and Gevers, 2015). Perturbing thinking helps people to avoid the use of traditional ideas and instead accept contemporary ideas that are much more advanced and help to solve complex problems easily. Traditional ideas have only one route to solve problems while on the other hand modern ideas provide various solutions to solve complex problems. A real life example can show the usefulness of the following thoughts. Mr. X is considering joining a new company which is offering him a better pay package as well as better facilities (Dawson and Constantine, 2014). The six caps of Perturbing thoughts comes in consideration at this particular point,

 White cap: Information

  • Job satisfaction in the new company
  • Incentives in the new company

Yellow cap: Logical viewpoint

  • Job would ensure happiness
  • Absence of Stress
  • More close to home

Red cap: Emotion

  • Missing old friends
  • Leaving the old job without prior notice
  • Sense of betrayal towards the old job

Green cap: Creativity

  • New job is in a different sector

Black cap: Risk involved

  • Fear of not getting the job
  • Fear of losing the current job

Blue cap: Broader perspective

Risk is always involved in any job so it is better to opt for it rather than not taking the opportunity. The people should be positive and thus they should allow these thoughts to overrule their normal thoughts.

Brainstorming can be defined as a set of different processes that are involved in the identification of new and effective ideas. These ideas differ a lot from those of the traditional ideas and thus they are capable of deducing a number of different complex solutions. I have also seen the uses of SCAMPER technique which is one of the best in the business in solving complex problems. It deals with a number of different approaches that help to create

Problem solving is one of the most important features of creativity. The inventions made till today have all been the cause of creativity. Every successful invention has been the cause of excellent creative nature. The invention of Bulb, phonograph, vacuum cleaners and all other different inventions were possible just because of creativity (Nijstad, Baas and Gevers, 2015). Creative solving of different problems happens at the time when the normal ideas or traditional ideas fail to make headway (Nijstad, Baas and Gevers, 2015). These ideas help one to discover new ways of solving complex problems. The seven different ways are Substitute, combining, adapting, modifying, putting resources to other uses, eliminating and finally reversing.

The importance of creativity in modern society

Principles of solving complex problems

  1. Treating Problems as questions- Treating the different problems as questions helps to easily solve the problems. This is because a number of different possibilities opens up which generates new data.
  2. The thinking must be managed- The positive and the negative thinking of the problems must be properly balanced and the ways to categorize such problems must be known.
  3. Cancelling the judgment process- The process of judging the problems must not be judged in the primary stage as such a rush will diminish the possibility of making a good decision. If the judgment is done at later stages the problem can be solved more easily (Dawson and Constantine, 2014).
  4. Being Positive- People must think positive and never bring any negative ideas in mind while solving the problem. Being positive helps to garner positive results.

Osborn-Parnes Creative Problem solving Process

There are three different phases of the following principle,

  1. Finding information- This stage includes defining the problem and accordingly strategize the planning to solve the complex problems by scrutinizing every information.
  2. Finding innovative ideas- The following phase is involved in the production and development of the ideas and then it can select the best ideas among them reprocess ideas.
  3. Finding the solution to the problems- The final step involves solving the problem and adopting a solution to the problem (Nijstad, Baas and Gevers, 2015).

TRIZ is a Russian term which stands for “Theory of Resolution of Invention related Tasks”. It is a creativity tool that is used to analyze, predict and solve complex problems. The theory grew in size based on different research works. TRIZ has grown on the pillars of all the inventions around the world (Dawson and Constantine, 2014). It has helped the researchers to define what the actual definition of evaluation is. The inventors of different applications have used the algorithmic style to add variations in their inventions.

The mentioned tool uses practical methods and a vast knowledge to find out solutions that help to solve the problems easily. The application of TRIZ helps to solve all the complex problems and makes every work smooth (Nijstad, Baas and Gevers, 2015).

Business innovation can be termed as the different methods or processes that are applied in the business to develop it. Innovation in business refers to the creation and implementation of revolutionary ideas that helps to meet the targets of the organization. The first step involved in innovation is the identification of new ideas and then implementing it in the particular business.

A number of different examples have been provided in lecture 7 which helps the readers to get a clear idea about innovation strategies in business. The strategy of moon foot Ltd. Is to provide people with once in a lifetime opportunity to feel the atmosphere of moon in closed chambers (Nijstad, Baas and Gevers, 2015). This strategy can be termed as a business innovation as because such a unique technique will help it to outperform the other competitors in the market.

Another example of innovative business solutions can be that of Glutton Dressing which has started providing the customers with dresses that are believed to hide them from the sea of crowd in the road. The creative innovation has drawn the attention of a number of people and has helped the organization to grow in stature (Nijstad, Baas and Gevers, 2015).

Story telling can be said to be another form of creative work. Describing a story in an organized manner really require skills and is not an easy task to achieve. Story helps to create interest among the listeners and also serves as the road to a number of innovative ideas. Storytelling can be defined as the identification of the sweet juice of a fruit and then tasting it. The art of telling the story in an organized manner helps the storyteller to connect with his readers which makes the story an instant hit (Dawson and Constantine, 2014).

Disruptive Technology refers to the acceptance of new technology by giving up the old technologies. People always accept the latest forms of technology to keep themselves updated and save their time and money (Nijstad, Baas and Gevers, 2015). Letter was once used as the means of written communication but it was replaced with electronic mails in a short span of time. Nowadays people use the sms services and various other social services to send messages to the concerned person.
