How do you feel when people around you violate norms? Of
course, we all violate norms now and then. Indeed, as we will see in Chapter 7,
deviance from norms is a major subject in sociology. What are the consequences
when many people begin violating norms? When you are driving in traffic, for
example, and someone passes you on the right-hand shoulder of the road, do you
follow their lead or do you continue to uphold the norm of staying in line?
What difference does it make what you and others do in such instances?
