It is important to know what law of conservation actually means. According to the law of conservation of energy the law is strictly confined to a closed system. The law states matter can neither be created nor destroyed it can only be transferred from one form to another. The amount of matter or mass which is present in the system in a system which is isolated will always be constant. The mass of the matter does not depend on the chemical or the physical change which is taking place. It is one of the important law in the field of chemistry. It is particularly used in field where there are different materials present in different combinations. It is also one of the basic law in the field of physics. The law clearly states that matter is a form of energy which is never created. The only thing that happens that it only changes to various forms. This clearly denotes that there is always availability of energy inside the system. There are different types of energy which is stored inside the system. It can be defined as the total energy system which is present inside the system. It can also be defined as the initial energy of a system. It is also defined as the work done by the system. It can also be stated as the heat which is added or removed from the system. It is also known as the first law of thermodynamics. The mass is directly related to the amount of energy present within the system. Moreover, it is stated as the total amount of energy present in the entire universe which is constant and will never change.  For example, suppose there is a candle in a close system that is in a closed room. After the melting of the wax the wax is not present in its original form, butt all the wax is present there as it is melted and present in the room in a different form. The law clearly states that the mass of the reactants must be equal to the mass of the products. It is one of the helpful invention in the field of chemistry as it helps the chemists. It is one of the important law to study the various chemical reactions occurring and its products.

Law of conservation of mass was proposed in the ancient Greeks. It was first proposed with the concept that the total amount of matter which is present in the universe will be constant. However, the person name Antoine Lavoisier discovered the concept that the total amount of matter which is present and constant can be easily defined with the help of the law of conservation of mass one off the fundamental principle proposed in the year of 1789. The law has gone through series of amendment by Einstein and he then related as the law of conservation of mass and energy. It helps in describing the different facts and the concept of the word constant that how the total mass and energy does not change. This idea clearly stated that mass and energy are the things which can neither be created nor destroyed, the only thing that can be done is they can be changed from one form to another. This law is very helpful. However, when a chemical reaction is taking place it is necessary that the mass of the products will be equal to the mass of the reactants in the entire process of chemical reaction. Before introducing this law, the scientist performed series of experiments, philosophical speculation and experiments.  The way in which the entire experiment was carried out clearly stated that it did not follow the usual scientific methods. The modification of the law was done and even a better law was proposed which was known as the law of conservation of mass and energy which was discovered by Einstein. The law followed a particular equation that E=mc^2. After the discovery of the law of conservation of mass, another law was discovered in the year of 1842 by Julius Robert Mayer named as Law of conservation of energy. It was in the year of 1907 the two laws were emerged and represented as a single law. The entire concept of the law is same as both mass and energy is built upon the same concept. The reason for merging both the law was that it created sense of confusion between the different researchers and scientists. However, the law of conservation of mass is one of the useful law used by scientists, chemist and researchers.

What Is the History Behind the Law of Conservation of Mass?

The law of conservation of mass can be seen in both real word and in our daily life. For example, let us a campfire, the campfire is started with piling big logs of wood. As the campfire starts to burn, the pile of logs which are there starts shrinking at a slow rate. It is observed at the end of the evening that there is only left over small piles of ashes. The question that can arise is that where is the matter which was present there in the starting of the campfire. It may be observed that burning destroys the matter, but the same amount of matter exists but in different forms. It is observed that when wood is burned, it starts combining with the oxygen and it gets changed into different forms not only it is converted into ashes it is also transferred into water vapour and carbon dioxide. It is observed that the mass of the wood used for campfire before it is burned and the mass of the ashes after the burning of the campfire is equal. It can be concluded that energy can be neither created nor destroyed due to burning. In fact, it only helps in changing from one form to another. It can also be stated that even if there is a chemical or physical change occurring, it is observed that total mass of matter will remain the same. Another example is there which can help in describing the law of conservation of mass. Consider the formation of the water molecules, it requires the combination of hydrogen with oxygen so that the formation of water molecules can occur. In such a case, after the calculations it is observed that the total mass of the reactants is equal to the total mass of the products. It is also clear that the number of hydrogen atoms and oxygen atoms which is there in the reactants sides and in the products side are equal. From the above mentioned reactions and real life example it can be clearly observed that in all the cases the mass before the reactions and the mass after the reaction is the same. The only difference that happens is in the form of the matter.

The Law of conservation of mass is something that can be explained in different ways. The law is true as the natural elements present in the universe is more. The conditions are stable for this law and it can easily be described with the help of various examples. Chemistry is a branch of physical science that helps in studying the matter, its energy and the way it interacts. When there are interactions between different matter it is important to study the law of conservation of energy. The law states that mass means or rather denotes that matter is something that can neither be created nor it can be destroyed. It only changes one form to another. In the field of chemistry, the entire law is used to balance the different type of chemical equations. There are different number and different types of atoms which are present in a specific proportion in both the reactants and products side. It is generally seen in case of different isolated system. The isolated system can be defined as a system which is closed and does not interacts with the surroundings system. As the system is closed it will remain constant, which is not linked with any type of chemical reactions. The outcome of all the reactions is different but the concept is same. According to Lavoisier, atoms is the object that cannot be destroyed or rather created. However, it can be easily changed or transferred into various particles. In different words it can be stated that in a chemical reaction the different atoms are rearranged and forms a completely into new products. The mass of the reactants is almost the same as the mass of the products. In other words, irrespective of what is done the amount remains the same. In different forms of reaction such as the nuclear reaction, radioactive decay and chemical reaction occurring in an isolated system the total mass of the materials must be or is equal to the mass of the products. Moreover, the law of conservation of energy is equivalent to the law of conservation of mass.
