Stakeholder Engagement In Engineering And Asset Management Sector: A Literature Review

Evolution of Stakeholder Engagement in Engineering and Asset Management Sector

Aviation is one of the fastest growing industries in the fast evolving economies. However, there are different issues that are faced by the organizations in maintaining steady relations with the community stakeholders. On the other hand, the involvement of the stakeholders in the processes of the business forms an integral part of the progression that is planned by the businesses. The poor conceptualization of the work functions of the aviation industry adversely affected the community due to the noise pollution. However, in the recent years the organizations has undertaken steps in order to bring in changes in conceptualizing the undertakings in order to prevent the noise creation. The stakeholder engagement in the aviation industry is mostly comprised of the involvement of the local communities.  The evolution of the stakeholder engagement in the processes has helped the aviation industry in maintaining the proper functioning of the systems of the business as per the objectives of its growth. Introduction of the ISAM framework in the processes of the aviation undertakings has helped in forging innovation and thereby undertake steps for conceptualizing the substantiated management of the assets of the businesses (Verbeke  and Tung 2013).

The discussion will be focused on identifying the evolution of the stakeholder engagement within the engineering and asset management sector. It will be helping to understand the changes that are brought about by the aviation industry in order to comply with the issues that are faced by the stakeholders and thereby improve the CSR activities for boosting the growth of the same.

Verbeke  and Tung (2013) stated that airport planning and the engagement of the stakeholders, especially the participation of the communities, brought about dynamic changes in the strategic planning procedures that are undertaken by the aviation industry. Sydney’s parallel runway project has faced issues relating to the engagement of the communities due to the high rates of noise that was annoying for the people residing near the location of the airport.

The identification of the different constrains to the engineering is based on the investments that are likely to be made by the organizations while operating in the global contexts. Involvement of the different stakeholders like the government, consultative bodies, the technical teams and media functioning in an integrated manner helps in upholding the interest of the engineering and asset management sector. Mok,   Shen  and Yang (2015) stated that the government plays a major role in maintaining the efficacy of the aviation engineering sector. The regulations and policies that are formed by the government helps the organizations in undertaking the proper functioning of the systems. On the other hand, Henisz,   Dorobantu  and Nartey (2014)  stated that the engagement of the consultative bodies has helped in maintaining the efficacy of the activities that are undertaken by the aviation industry in order  to undertake the green sustainability approach.  The performance of the aviation industry is primarily based on the activities of the consultative bodies, which results to the actualization of the different prospects of growth as per the objectives. However, Brunetto,   Xerri  and Nelson (2013) noted that the  technical assistance teams and the R&D  departments of the organizations in the aviation industry facilitates the innovative nature of the industry with its primary concerns of adhering to the requirements of the communities.  The technical teams of the organization and the R&D departments of the same has helped in maintaining the efficacy of the infrastructural design.

Issues and Constraints in Engineering and Asset Management Sector

Turner  and Zolin  (2012) stated that stakeholder engagement in the early years was based on the profitability of the ventures thereby negating the interests of the communities. Noise that was created through the functioning of the aviation industry has affected the interests of the communities residing near the location of the airports. Sonnenburg (2013) stated that the stakeholder engagements in the aviation industry is mainly based on the compliances of the communities. The involvement of the communities in the different activities that are undertaken by the airline industries has helped in the steady growth of the same. However, Mok,   Shen  and Yang (2015)  stated that the  noise that is released due to the  exhaust velocity of the aircrafts has affected the communities largely. Carbon that is emitted through the aircrafts has adversely affected the air quality of the regions. The involvement of the stakeholders in the engineering processes is based on the identification of the issues that are faced by the same through the activities that are planned by the aviation industry. Therefore, Tangri (2018) added that the involvement of the local communities for providing a feedback to the organization has helped the same in bringing forth modifications in the engineering process that was followed by the industry.

On the other hand, Oppong,   Chan  and Dansoh (2017) stated that the asset management as per the ISAM standards, which will be helping the aviation industry in internalizing the needs and expectations of the community stakeholders. The management and allocation of the assets has helped the industry in growing as per the capabilities and expectations of the community stakeholders. KW Wong et al. (2014) stated that the involvement of the community in the different processes of the aviation industry has helped the same in identifying the issues and thereby undertake a pre planned CSR approach. However, Backlund, Chronéer  and Sundqvist (2014) argued that the implementation of the different standards will be resulting to an increase in the operating costs for the industry by some $30 billion by the next 20 years (KW Wong et al. 2014). It will be affecting the profitability index of the organization while operating as per the objectives of the business.

Stakeholder engagement in the early years was specifically based on the Naturalistic Inquiry and Fourth Generation Evaluation, which helps in upholding the suitable functioning of the systems of the business operations. Brown et al. (2014) stated that the naturalistic inquiry has helped the R&D departments in coming up with innovative ideas in order to bring in changes in the industrial frameworks and the engineering departments. Tangri (2018) also stated that the active participation of the stakeholders has helped in maintaining the congruency of the innovative techniques that are implemented by the organizations to support sustenance of the same. Sustenance of the processes that are considered by the organizations has helped in upholding the diversified standards of the CSR activities that are planned by the business.

Role of Various Stakeholders in the Aviation Industry

The naturalistic inquiry has helped the departments in maintaining the efficacy of the functions as per the needs of the community stakeholders. However, Verbeke  and Tung (2013) stated that the approach of stakeholder engagement that is utilized in the modern era are based on the communication, connectivity and the automation of work. Communication has helped in interlinking the views of the stakeholders of the engineering and asset management, which helps in identifying the issues more proficiently. Automation of the work that is being performed by the people has helped in increasing the efficiency of the functions as per the objectives of growth of the business processes. Widén,   Olander  and Atkin (2013) stated that the evaluation of the different processes as per the outcomes has helped the earlier generations in making use of most of the stakeholder engagement procedures for bringing forth innovation in the processes. However, Mojtahedi  and Oo (2017) argued that the introduction of communication and connectivity in the stakeholder engagement procedures has helped in maintaining the collaborative actions in order to process the assorted outcomes of the organization. Moreover, Oppong,   Chan  and Dansoh (2017) stated that the initiation of the automated technologies has helped in upholding the efficacy of the processes and thereby maintain the operations as per the expectations of the stakeholders. For an instance, the application of the automated technology on the runway project would have helped in minimizing the noise that affected the community stakeholders of the region. Moreover, the communication systems would have helped in strengthening the relation with the stakeholders for encouraging a better involvement function of the same.

KW Wong et al. (2014) started that the initiation of the projects will be facilitated through the evaluation of the project outcomes as it helps in providing better planning options. Moreover, it also helps in enumerating the risks that might be faced through the implementation of the projects in the different regions. However, Mahadkar, Mills  and Price ( A.D., 2012) argued that the proper functioning of the processes of the engineering systems will be developed through establishing suitable communication with the stakeholders of the business. Utilization of appropriate communication technologies will be helping the organizations in identifying the issues that might be faced by the stakeholders through the implementation of the project. Verbeke  and Tung (2013) added that the project outcomes that are received through the evaluations were mainly assumptions of the manner in which the project could be dispatched without risks. However, communication has helped in maintaining the efficacy of the projects through the clear identification of the issues that are faced by the stakeholders and thereby encourage the stakeholders of the project to become an integral part of the same for the success.

Innovative Techniques in Stakeholder Engagement Procedures

The different propositions that are undertaken by the businesses are based on the CSR activities as it helps in maintaining the ethical backdrops of the business. The early methods of stakeholder engagement is based on the identification of the substantiate issues which has helped in identifying the different risk that might be encountered by the organization while undertaking a project  initiation. However,  Ayuso et al.  (2014) stated that the whole concept of stakeholder engagements has changed in the  modern generation with the introduction of different modes of communication and the suitable functioning of the media. The media reporting and the different channels of communication has helped the organizations in interacting with its stakeholders and thereby consider the stakeholders of trust. It has helped the organizations in maximizing the stakeholder engagements in the different processes.

Backlund, Chronéer  and Sundqvist (2014) also stated that the automation of the functioning has helped most of the organizations in maintaining the efficacy of the processes as per the objectives of the business. Different organizations have taken steps to build on the trust of the societal groups through the automation of the processes that are planned by the business. Turner  and Zolin  (2012) argued that the automation of the practices requires huge capital investments that are required to be undertaken by the organizations. It affects the organizational growth through the maximization of the operating costs. However, Li,  Ng  and Skitmore (2013) stated that the optimization of the organizational engineering ventures and asset management is enhanced through the utilization of automated technologies in the businesses. It helps in maintaining the sustenance of the systems of the business as per the objectives of its growth. Involvement of communication helps in making the stakeholders aware of the position of the organization and the projects that the organization aspires to undertake for the improvements in the situation. Technological innovation in the systems of the business helps in maintaining the efficacy. Although, Brown et al. (2014) stated that the development of the organizations are based on the expectation and concerns of the  stakeholders. Therefore, the involvement of the stakeholders through connectivity in the modern era has helped in identifying the  issues and concerns and thereby mitigate the same in order to maintain the proficiency of the functions of the business.  On the other hand, Widén,   Olander  and Atkin (2013) stated automation of the systems has helped in bringing forth improvements in the  engineering procedure. It will be helping the organization in maintaining the standards of the provisions that are created by the business for adhering to the expectation of the stakeholders.

Project Evaluation and Risk Assessment

Therefore, difference between the ways of undertaking stakeholder engagements in the early and the modern era is based on the technological expansion in both the asset management and engineering aspects. The implementation of suitable channels of communication and connectivity has helped organizations in enhancing the  engagement of the stakeholders. On the other hand, the automation of the processes of the business has helped in maintaining the efficacy of the different projects through suitable utilization of  technologies for enhancing the performance of the projects.

The parallel runway project in Sydney was affected by the noise that was created by the implementation of the project, which affected the community stakeholders largely. Sonnenburg (2013) stated in the report that the noise that was emitted by the affected the healthy  lifestyle of the people. The change that would be perceived if the project was proposed in the modern day will be related to the communicational channels and the automation of the different technological aspects. Henisz,   Dorobantu  and Nartey (2014) stated that the utilization of proper communication channels will be helping to maximize the involvement of the community stakeholders in the process of the project in the modern day. Moreover, Brunetto,   Xerri  and Nelson (2013) stated that the utilization of the automated technologies would be helping the project in reducing the levels of noise that was created by the project back in the year 1980’s. The change in the stakeholder engagement approach will be helping the organizations in maintaining a healthy relation with the stakeholders. It was indicated earlier in the research that the community is the major stakeholder of the industry. Therefore, the identification of the issues that was earlier undertaken as per the assumptions would be effective through the proper implementation of relevant technologies to the project outline. Mok,   Shen  and Yang (2015) stated that the stakeholder engagement is one of the primary objectives of implementing projects. Therefore, in order to increase the engagement of the stakeholders, the organization must take steps to build strong communication channels  and utilize automated technologies which will be helping the same in  reducing the different issues that are faced y the stakeholders.

Conclusion

Therefore, it can be stated from the above discussion that the proper functioning of the systems of the engineering and asset management is based on the level of stakeholder engagements in the processes that are planned by the businesses. The identification of the issues that are faced by the stakeholders and the mitigation of the same helps in maintaining the efficacy of the functions of the projects and its relevant outcomes. An instance of the parallel runway is drawn in this context where the project was affected due to the lower engagement of the stakeholders. The research develops an insight of the different ways through which the stakeholder engagements are maintained by the organizations earlier and in the modern era. The identification of the issues meagrely does not support the safe implementation of the process unless the stakeholders are actively involved in the process. The modernized approach of stakeholder engagement in the engineering and asset management sector is based on the communicational channels and the automated techniques that are utilized by the organizations. It helps in maintaining the efficacy of the functions as per the expectations of the stakeholders. The research however includes views negating the technological upheaval, as it requires huge capital investments to be made by the organizations.  Then again, the stakeholder engagement through communication and utilization of automated technologies helps in maintaining the efficacy of the systems of the business.
