World has become a global village and globalization has opened doors for people of different backgrounds and countries to come closer and interact with each other. As a consumer, our decisions are heavily influenced by socio-cultural factors. Therefore, to understand rationale behind consumer’s decisions related to any product or service, it is vital that we evaluate the external factors involved.
Being a new student at University of New England, Australia I had the opportunity to use many facilities that SportUNE offer.
With the establishment of University of New England (UNE) in 1938, SportUNE also became operational. Since its inception, it is open to not only to students studying in UNE, but also for community usage boosting an overall culture of wellbeing and staying active. SportUNE offers many facilities for students which includes state-of-the-art Gym, playing fields along with two multipurpose halls, a climbing wall, 25 meter heated indoor pool, multiple courts and a café along with group fitness classes, health and wellbeing programs, personal trainers, and access to more than twenty sporting clubs from a variety of different sports. (SportUNE, 2017)
Among various facilities that SportUNE offers, the facility that I choose for this assignment is the Gym and Synopsis for this decision-making is explained below.
Main Body:
In our lives there are many decisions that we take on daily basis whether it is the brand of milk we buy, model of a car, neighborhood we choose to live in, school our kids go to or holiday destination we choose. Decisions are an integral part of every human’s life, which are influenced by various internal and external factors (Schiffman et, al., 2014, p: 24). For assignment 1, we will examine how these external factors namely culture, social class, reference groups and family that provides an input in a consumer decision-making.
Decision-Making Process:
The decision-making is a five-stage process which includes problem recognition, pre-purchase search, and evaluation of alternatives, purchase and post-purchase. (Schiffman et, al., 2014, p: 488)
I along with my husband and two children moved to Australia from Pakistan when I got admission in UNE. We moved to Armidale before my coursework started. As my youngest child was born just before we relocated to Australia, I did not have enough time to exercise and return to my pre-pregnancy weight. Now with mounting pressure of managing home and studies with baby around, I had my hands full and was unable to take out time for my own self and I felt stress all the time. This situation gave rise to problem recognition stage.

Living in Armidale, I searched online for different activities that can incorporate with my hectic routine. My search revealed that there are few fitness clubs in Armidale like Anytime fitness, Feelgood Gym, chilli gym, Mick & Colleen’s Fitness Centre etc that offered various facilities. Influence of Family:
Former Sociologists articulated that children learn basic consumption behaviour from their parents (Riesman and Roseborough, 1955). Brought up and raised in an extended family (Schiffman et, al, 2014p: 326), many family members played vital role as a stimulant to shape values and attitudes to lead a healthy lifestyle.
Socialization of Family members:
Parents play major role in shaping the consumer socialization of children where parents act as socialization agents. Through the perceptual and analytical stage (John, 1999), as a child I grew up observing my parents take decisions and follow a healthy lifestyle. I used to accompany my mother to the gym and shadowed her exercise routines followed by healthy eating habits developed my positive attitude towards achieving physical fitness. (Schiffman, 2014d, p: 328)
Family Life cycle:
As an adult and passing through the parenthood stage engaging in primary school phase of traditional family lifecycle (Schiffman, 2014d, p: 335), it is difficult to manage time with two kids for one’s own self. Juggling time between kids’ school, day care, karate classes, house chores and studies is a difficult job and results in over exhaustion and stress. SportUNE offers free crèche service (SportUNE crèche, 2017) for young children so I was able to enjoy my workout routines without worrying about finding a babysitter for my baby. Also, added incentive that service is free of cost so it was not added burden financially.
Dynamics of Husband-wife decision-making:
Multiple decisions in our household are influenced by the husband-wife decision-making dynamics. Generally as husband and wife, as identified by (Sciffman et, al., 2014, p: 345) we took syncretic/ joint decisions when choosing our child’s primary school, deciding holiday but in-case of deciding whether SportUNE, facility, it was an autonomic decision (Schiffman et, al., 2014, p: 345) as I became the decider, by taking a gym membership, I became buyer and by going to the gym regularly to exercise made me the user of the facility (Schiffman et, al (2014, p: 342).
Reference Group:
Bearden and Etzel (1982) identified that the products and brands nominated by the individuals can be subjective to their reference groups. According to (Sciffman et, al., 2014, p: 289), reference groups classifies different individuals in consumer’s life as role model for their attitudes and behavior. Staying happy, healthy, active and confident is the attitude that was religiously practiced in my family throughout my life becoming normative reference group in my decision.
When I visited SportUNE gym, I noticed that there were many women using gym with their little kids being taken care of in Crèche, I felt association with them because of similar parenthood stage. So they acted as an associative reference group. (Sciffman et, al., 2014, p: 290).
Jillian Michaels, a successful American personal trainer acted as an Aspirational reference group (Sciffman et, al., 2014, p: 290), for my decision to join gym because I grew up watching her Television program “The Biggest Looser” which inspired me to develop healthy lifestyle and stay in shape. Similarly fitness trainers and experts like Emily Skye, Kristy Welsh and Bob Harper, are few of the notable people who acted as an Aspirational reference in my decision to join gym and get in shape.

Few of my friends who are already studying in UNE, Armadale and are regular user of SportUNE gym facility put great confidence in the gym environment, friendly and helpful trainers, up to date gym equipment and awesome gym environment became the opinion leaders (Sciffman et, al., 2014, p: 295) making me an opinion receiver (Sciffman et, al., 2014, p: 295)in my assignment.
Social Class
According to latest survey conducted by ANU Centre for Social research and Methods, 19th ANU Polls (ANUpoll, 2015), Dr Jill Sheppard & Dr Nicholas Biddle identified that 92% of the Australians identified themselves as middle class or working class with 52% identified as middle class and 40% as working class. There are multiple factors that work as a catalyst for identifying different social class categories one belongs to depending upon objective measures of social class. These variables are occupation, income and education.
My husband and I both work in managerial roles and our accumulated income is higher than 100,000 per annum, which categorizes my family in an established middle class category, which according to the survey conducted by BBC concludes 25% of the estimated population (Dr Jill Sheppard & Dr Nicholas Biddle, 2015).
As a middle-class household, I consider myself as a non-affluent consumer (Schiffman et, al, 2014, p:380) considers Gym as a disposable income.
Culture is nurtured from the early age where family teaches acceptable behavior and values to children. Parents spread it through traditions, bedtime stories, customs, religious festivities and customs. Culture defines who we are, what we believe in and how we spend our lives. We learn what is acceptable in society and how to behave though values that are instigated either at home or through informal learning (Schiffman et, al., 2014).
When I moved to Australia from Pakistan, I encountered big cultural gap. It was pertinent that I learn Australian culture through Acculturation (Schiffman et, al., 2014, p: 398) to settle and enjoy the lifestyle I wish for myself and my family. I decided to join SportUNE gym with core values of achievement, stimulation and conformity (Schiffman et, al., 2014, p: 411-414) was achieving my desired goal of losing weight, state of art facilities and fitness classes as stimulation for change and conformity to myself for respecting my body.
Ethnic Subculture:
When I bought SportUNE membership, my husband gifted me with new pair of Nike Sneakers to motivate and encourage me. This gifting behavior (Schiffman et, al., 2014, p: 436) is commonly practiced in Southeast Asian culture where every occasion is celebrated.
Age Subculture:
As part of generation Y cohort, multiple things attracted my attention when I visited Gym for evaluation of alternatives.
All the cardio equipment is technologically advance with touch screen displays and personal entertainment, free gym accreditation service along with friendly and helpful staff (SportUNE, facilities, 2017).
Relationship between External Factors and Decision-making Process:
In given assignment, parenthood stage of family lifecycle, aspirational reference groups, social core values and being a generation Y member provided sufficient influence to initiate process in decision-making model.
Following the above discussion, I have concluded that external factors like family, culture and subculture, social class, reference groups and opinion leaders all play important role in providing information to consumer to recognize the need for a change. These all factors are either directly or indirectly inter-related e.g. family members act as reference groups, which can be associative or dissociative in nature. Culture acts as a cornerstone in shaping values and beliefs of an individual that influences the family decision-making.

Work Experience As A Gym Instructor Physical Education Essay

Gym Instructor: I like this job because you can physically see the results of your work. Also being able to change how a person looks and feels about themselves would be quite rewarding. If you were teaching class it would enable you to keep fit yourself also.
P.E. Teacher: This has always been my ideal career option.being paid to teach something that you love doing and the extra holidays are a great incentive.
Physiotherapist: I have always really wanted to be a physiotherapist from a young age. I am fascinated with the abilities and respect that comes with this job.

Task 4
As I knew all of the staff quite well in the sports centre gym applying for my work experience was quite easy. I visited the gym regularly and on one occasion I approached the manager and asked her would it be okay for me to do my work experience here. She told me it was no problem and they would be glad to help. The manager, Maura, asked me to write a short letter of application and e-mail it to her.
My goals for my work experience were as follows;
To decide whether or not the job is a possible career option I would pursue.
To improve further on my communication skills.
To deal confidently with members, staff and the public.
To gather as much information and tips for my college course and possible further career as much as possible.
To possibly secure a job for the summer.
Aside from not securing a job for the summer I feel I achieved my overall goals from my work placement. I was able to build up a working relationship with all of the staff and still keep in contact with them when I see them or am in the gym. With improving my communication skills I found myself being able to deal with members’ queries at the desk or on the phone very confidently. In regard to using my work experience to help with my college course I was able to do so. I would attend and participate in spinning classes, aerobics classes, body pump classes etc and watch the instructor to pick up tips and would also help with the assessments of new members, taking their pulses, etc. I feel the most vital of all my goals was reached and that was to decide whether or not the job is a possible career option I would pursue. I feel confident in saying that this would definitely be an ideal job for me.
Travel-Working in the sports centre was quite convenient for me as I live exactly 2km away from the gym. Most days I was in at 2 o’clock so I would leave at approximately quater to and walk up as it would take me around 15 minutes to walk to work
Cost-The cost of my work experience was very low. I had no travel expenses and the cost of food was relatively cheap. I would usually spend about €5 a day on lunch or if I had a packed lunch then I would only spend one euro on a cup of tea or a cold drink in the café.
Food-For the first few days I brought a packed lunch but then I started going to the café on the ground floor of the gym where there is all sorts of hot food to choose from. The café prices were quite expensive but all staff are entitled to a discount of 25%, which I took full advantage of. Other times I walk two minutes down the street to the centre of the town.
Dress: On my work experience I was given a uniform t-shirt to wear. It was a plain white polo t-shirt with the centre logo on it. I had to wear that and tracksuit bottoms. When participating in classes I would wear shorts and a t-shirt
A typical day would consist of: leaving my house in enough time so that I would not be late for work, usually I was quite early. When I got there I would leave my bag down in the locker area and report to the reception desk to find out what I they had planned for me for the day from Sinead, the receptionist. I would usually have a short break depending on the hours I worked and leave after the evening class at around 8 or nine.
I secured my work placement in two steps;
I first called up to the gym, just to check with the manager if I was able to do my work experience there. She told me that it would be no problem at all and that I needed to call up with a copy of insurance forms and send an application by e-mail.
The next week I called in with the appropriate forms and a copy of my C.V. I then e-mailed her my application
As Maura the gym manager had known me previously we got on very well. She was very welcoming and helpful particularly in getting me started on my work experience.
Before starting my work placement in newbridge sports centre I had good expectations. I am a member up there so I knew where everything was and what facilities they had. I thought working as an instructor was full of activity with no rest in between and had lots of people to see and help. However, this was not the case. There is a lot of waiting around doing nothing for instructors. Some instructors will only teach two classes and could only have one or two assessments a day leaving them idol for large parts of it. But, working on the management side of things was quite interesting. At least there was always some arranging of some sort to do e.g. class schedules. Overall I really enjoyed my experience in the gym meeting new people and getting a very good overall insight into the career of a gym instructor.
Newbridge sports and leisure centre
Set up in the centre of the town of newbridge, the sports centre has an excellent range of facilities from indoor courts, outdoor astro pitches, childs playground, state of the art gym and also a “the coffee dock” which allows people to unwind and socialise. The gym also boasts great sauna and steam room facilities.
It also provide a great choice of fitness classes plus a range of family activities. The sports centre staff and instructors are expertly trained and have vast experience in their field. They offer great one-to-one sessions and give great fitness and diet plans.
I am a member of this gym and can support the above statements. I really enjoy the friendly atmosphere in the gym and valuable input from the staff.
Diary (log book)
Day 1 My first day at the gym began with getting up at the appropriate time and putting on my uniform. I then had my lunch and left for the gym. I arrived there at about five to two. I introduced myself to the woman at the reception desk and explained that I was starting my work experience that day. She told me to drop my gear bag in the lockers and then come back out to her and she would explain what I was doing for the day. When I came back she introduced me to Eugene, an instructor at the gym. He told me that I would be shadowing him for the day during his assessments and programmes. We started off with a tour around the gym and into the canteen and other places where only staff were allowed was familiar with the gym as I am a member there. We then moved onto a spinning class at 3.30 in the spinning studio. I had done finished a spinning class before so I decided to take it easy and observe Eugene more than participate in the class. I sat up the front of the class facing everyone beside Eugene. He welcomed the class, introduced himself, explained what they would be doing and then introduced me and explained that I was on work experience. He then made sure there was no injuries or pregnancies. The class lasted 40 minutes. When that was over we did assessments on a few members. This involved taking heart rates, getting their BMI’s and other medical information and details. We would them use these to devise a fitness programme for the individual which suits them. After that Eugene and I would take the person on a run through of all the exercises they would be using. When we had finished the assessments we went for lunch. Next there was a bodyblast class with Anette. She was a nice woman with a great backround as a trainer and instructor After the class I had a shower and relaxed in the steam room before going home at four.
Day 2 My second day began much like the first, except today I was shadowing a different instructor named Matt. Today I was to be taking part in another spinning class and a circuit, which has many different stations with exercises alternating between upper and lower body. Again I sat at the front of the spinning class and observed Matt as he instructed the class. At the end Matt let me take the warm down and stretch. Next we moved onto the circuit class which 45 minutes in duration. After that Matt and I had our break in the canteen. After our break Matt and I cleaned the machines in the gym. I finished at half 8.
Day 3 This was the day after St. Patrick’s day and as the gym was closed at one I got the day off.
Day 4 Day four meant I got a great opportunity to part-take in a very unusual task. An athlete training for the special Olympics named Willy came for his regular work out in the sports centre. Willy is hoping to be selected for the Irish special Olympics swimming team in Beijing. Willy is blind and only has 2 percent vision and counts out how many strokes there are in each length of the pool. It was very different working with Willy as he had a whole different approach to training but was very dedicated and it was inspiring to see.
Day 5 Today I was working with sinead at the reception desk. We mainly chatted and dealt with customers over the phone and in person. I finished this day at two o’clock.
Day 6 Today I was getting a look at how the gym is ran through the management. I turned up for work at 12 o’clock and reported to the head manager, Maura. We spent most of the day organising the new advertisement posters and radio adverts over the phone with various printing companies and graphic design artists. I was also allowed to ring on of the printing companies to make enquiries about printing samples. I finished my day at around 6 o’clock.
Day 7
Today I was shadowing Matt again. I was with him during his screening and assessments. This consisted mainly of just watching matt assess the customers and understanding why he asked certain questions and why he done certain tests. Matt and I talked about his job and the qualifications he had. We went to lunch at 3 o’clock. After lunch I done some cleaning with matt in the aerobics studio. I finished that day at six o’clock.
Day 8 I was at the reception desk again today doing pretty much the same as day five however one customer had slipped out in the basketball court. He broke his shoulder from the landing and had to be removed to hospital straight away it was my job to ring the hospital. The ambulance arrived and he was taken in straight away.
Day 9 Today I was back to shadowing Eugene and did a spinning class the body blast class. As I done previously I observed and took part in each class. In the spinning I was allowed take both the warm up and the warm down and stretch. I was heavily praised in my confidence and knowledge of the exercises by both Eugene and the participants.
Day 10 Today was my last day and I was shadowing Tina. Tina was a relative of Maura the manager and was quite young. Even though she was inexperienced herself she was an excellent instructor. We started off with a class called bums tums and thighs, which I helped set up i.e. mats, weights, swiss ball. This class was mainly aimed at women but I enjoyed it also. After that class we did circuit training. I also helped set up for this and took the warm up and also demonstrated the exercises at each station. When I was leaving Sinead and Maura both praised me heavily for my work and said if I got my qualification they would be more then happy to offer me a job.
Review & Evaluation
I am glad to have completed my work experience here. I feel confident that this is a career I would like to pursue later in life. As far as my learning goals went I think that I achieved them quite well. With regard to dealing with members, staff and the public I think showed that I can handle these confidently, whether in person or on the phone. I’ve learned that being confident in front of a class not only settles the class but also helps settle you and encourages the class more. I also feel I gained a lot of tips from my experience. I possibly did not get enough management experience but enjoyed the indtructing and assessing side of the work. My choice of work placement and my college course are quite closely connected. A lot of what we learn in college is geared towards working in a gym. The classes I attended and the things I picked up in them will definitely benefit me in my college course. In some ways my work experience exceeded my expectations however in some ways it did not. For example, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the management side of things. I thought that I would have found this the most boring part of all but there is a lot more to do management wise than I had first thought. However, with regard to the gym side of things I was expecting a lot more. It seemed to me like there wasn’t much to do besides classes and assessments. For me, I would rather be busy than looking for something to do as it passes the day quicker. This was a great experience for me as I now know where I would like to work if I was to work in a gym, which is a very valuable learning curve for me.

Benefits of physical activity in gym
Physical activity in gym helps promote physical fitness for our body that is increase in cardiovascular endurance which strengthen the muscle of the heart and blood vessels when using treadmill and bicycle, promote bone density and makes then more solid as the weight put stress on the bones which in response increase their density to make them more solid and so prevent diseases such as osteoporosis (Osteoporosis happens when the bones decrease in mass making it more fragile), increased muscle mass not only increase our strength but also makes us burn more calories as lean muscle mass fires up our metabolism during work out and even after as the body needs energy to maintain this new muscle mass (Shawn LeBrun, 2002; Yigal Pinchas, 2006).
Gym population:
The gym population comprises of everyone from children, adolescents, adults to seniors. These groups of people have different goals for training in gym from trying to keep fit and control body weight to conditioning the body to perform at its highest level in competition so it is not uncommon to see professional sports men to workout at the gym at the same time with people doing rehabilitation exercises. Cases of gym accidents:
With the increase number of people going to gym, the risk of accident happening in them increased. Gym injuries can range from minor injuries such as small superficial cuts and bruises to severe sprain and strain, crushed body parts and rarely death. Weight room injuries has wake public awareness when a University of Southern California American football player star was injured to his throat and was lucky to survive when his bench press bar slipped from his hand and fell on him. Mr Stafon Johnson received a load of 275 pound nearly 125 kg on his throat and had to undergo multiple neck and throat surgeries. He couldn’t speak for months because of his injuries. Another severe case of injury happened when another American football player nearly got his fingers ripped off while training in the weight room ( Josh Staph, 2010). Reed Remington was doing shoulder press with a load of 165 pound (75 kg), when he found out he didn’t have enough strength to push it up from head level, he arched his back to try to lock it out but lost balance while doing so, so he tried to throw the weight bar in front of his head but ended up having the bar hitting his head while falling down, his right hand got caught between the weight and the apparatus holding the weight which crushed his index finger and ripped it off. After surgery, Reed Remington had to stay at hospital for five days and 3 weeks at home for recovery (Tim Rogers, 2010).

Manual handling of loads is describe as the action of lifting, pulling & pushing, moving, lowering, holding and carrying any objects using the force generated from the human body.
As seen above, weight training injury takes a lot of time to heal up, leading to temporary impairment and sometimes permanent disabilities if the injury is severe. This affects the income of a working people, his social life and family life and the company currently employing him.
Problem Statement:
With gym getting more popular these days, more and more people are adopting weight training in their lifestyle. According to a statistic report published in THE NEW YORK TIMES, weight training injuries are on the raise due to it gaining popularity and trainees dropping their weight where they shouldn’t. From year 1990 to 2007 data collected shows us that nearly one million Americans end up at emergency section in the hospital due to weight lifting injuries and that a yearly increase of 48 percents were noticed in that period. According to The American Journal of Sports Medicine, of the 970,000 people injured, 82 percent were men but this trend is changing, number of injuries among women doing weight training is on the rise yearly with 63 percent as opposed to men which is 46 percent. This may be due to the increase of women adopting gym training in their lifestyle. People between the age 13 to 24 recorded the most number of injuries but concern is rising with people between 45 to above as they have recorded the greatest increase of weight training injuries as many of them want to delay or regain the muscle loss due to ageing (Jane E Brody, 2010)
The most common injures encountered among women were in the region of their feet and legs while in men the majority were in the region of the torso and hand. Fractures were mostly reported among women while men suffered more from sprain and strain. Most of the injuries encountered were by dropping weight on themselves with body parts being crushed or by getting hit by the equipment they are exercising. Loss of balance, overexertion and muscle pull formed 14 percent of injuries which were treated at emergency rooms and 90 percent of the injuries happened while using free weight than weight machine (Nicholas Bakalar, 2010)
In Mauritius the average income of workers is about Rs18,247 monthly according to a survey done by the Mauritius Employers’ Federation. (Nilen Kattany, 2011). This have give rise to different gym service facilities offered to Mauritian across the country. They are categories by the number of service they offer, from new sophisticated ergonomic well maintained state of the art weight machine, free weight and coaching system, sauna facility, air conditioned room, good lighting to old out of fashion weight machine from the 1960, Weight machine constructed by owner of the gym by welding iron bars which sometimes isn’t ergonomic for everyone as it isn’t adjustable, bad flooring as the owner hasn’t repaired the floor which was damaged by dropping free weight on it which create a risk of slip, trip and falls , no coaching system such as municipal gym multi sport complex where you have the weight machine and free weight but no one to spot you which can lead to accidents for example being crushed under a bench press bar, coaching system but with unqualified coach, congested areas where there are too many members training at the same time and you have the risk of being hit by someone training with a weight while moving around and poorly maintained weight machine. Gyms offering good services are quite expensive in Mauritius with a monthly membership fees of Rs1000 to more so most Mauritian (especially teenagers due to their low income) prefer to train in gym offering low to medium services where monthly fees may range from free (Municipal Gym Multisport complex) to Rs 900 making them more exposed to weight training injuries.
Aim and Objectives:
To minimise the risk of manual handling injuries in Weight training Gym.
To identify the risk elements contributing to manual handling injuries in weight training exercises.
Identify common weight training exercises which has a significant risk of bodily injuries.
Assess the risk of bodily injuries due to gym environment, individual factors such gender and age
Give recommendation to minimise the risk of the accidents.
Manual handling of loads is describe as the action of lifting, pulling & pushing, moving, lowering, holding and carrying any objects whether lively or dead by using the force generated by the human body.
The Occupational safety and health act 2005 (OSHA 2005 )
The Occupational safety and health act 2005 points out the legal requirement for health and safety that an employer has to abide. Although OSHA 2005 focus mainly on employees, it is the duty of the employer to ensure that people other than his employees are not affected by health and safety issues arising during operation of his business
Section 5 General duties of employers:
According to section (5)(2) General duties of employers, the employer shall, so far as is reasonably practicable, ” provide and maintain a safe working environment”, “provide and maintain any plant or system of work”, “maintain any place of work under his control that is safe and without risks to health”, “ensure that use, handling, of articles is safe and without risks to health” and “provide information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure the safety and health at work of his employees”.
Section 10 Risk assessment by employer:
Section 10 of OSHA 2005 stressed out the legal obligation of an employer to carry out a risk assessment. “Every employer shall, within 30 days of the start of operation of his undertaking, make a suitable and sufficient assessment of any risk to the safety and health to which any employee is exposed whilst he is at work”, “and any risk to the safety and health of any person not in his employment”.
Section 84 Manual handling operation:
According to this section, every employer shall (a) so far so far as is reasonably practicable, avoid the need for his employees to undertake any manual handling operations at work which involve a risk of bodily injury (b) where it is not reasonably practicable to avoid the need for his employees to undertake any manual handling operations at work which involve a risk of bodily injury-
take appropriate steps to reduce the risk of bodily injury to those employees arising out of their undertaking any such manual handling operations to the lowest level reasonably practicable.
take appropriate steps to provide any of those employees who are undertaking such manual handling operations with general indications and precise information on the weight and nature of each load to be handled.
provide sufficient training in the safe techniques or methods of manual lifting and handling to any employee who is required in the normal course of his work regularly to lift, carry or move loads exceeding 18 kilograms for any employee
Section 84 (3) defines manual handling as any transporting or supporting of a load, including the lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving thereof by hand or by bodily force. This definition reflect exactly the exercises practiced in weight training exercises.
Although these legislation focus mainly on employees, it is the legal duty of the employer to ensure the safety and health of any visitors visiting the workplace. By applying these measures to the gym, it will not only affect the health and safety of the employees but also have an impact on the visitors which will reduce the likelihood of fines and any civil prosecutions due to injuries. According to OSHA 2005, the maximal penalty under this act is RS75,000 and a maximum of 1 year imprisonment.
In this subsection, we will go into detail about the different types of people frequenting the gym, They are divided into different age group and needs to train in gyms. They are namely children, adolescents, adults, seniors,
Children are described as someone under the age of twelve. Children before this age weren’t allowed to workout in gym in the US as there was fear that children practicing weight training would be prone to injuries such as damaged growth cartilage which would stunt their growth. Research done by Docherty, Wenger, Collis, & Quinney, Hetherington also concluded that weight training at this age was futile as none of their research could demonstrate any adequate increase in strength and muscle mass from test subject doing weight training at this age. Their theory for this result was it was because children lack sufficient androgens in their blood at this age (Androgen is the hormone responsible for the development of skeletal muscle mass). Theory about children being at more risk of injuries when practicing weight training was confirmed by report published by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission in the year 1987 which found out that of the 8543 weight training related injuries most of them were younger than 14 years old. But recent research done by Faigenbaum, Milliken, Moulton, & Westcott in 2007 discovered that properly designed resistance training exercise (weight training) for children and adolescents increased their muscle strength and decreased the likely hood of injuries and that data from previous research was inaccurate as training exercises use to collect data was for adult. (Aleksandar Ignjatović et Al, 2009). Doing weight training at this age proved to contribute for better posture, improved self confidence, contribute to improve motor abilities and intramuscular coordination. Adolescent is described as someone between the age of 12 and 17 years old. Physical activity at this age is crucial for achieving the optimum development and growth potential of the body. This is because after these ages, the skeletal system will start to hardened and will be less stimulated by physical exercises and development of the skeletal system will stunt even if weight training exercises is used. Strength training at this age can be done with free weights, weight training machine and by using the body own weight. Strength training at this age must be strictly supervised such as frequency of training, types of exercises done, intensity and duration of exercises to ensure strength increase of the adolescent and minimum risk of injuries (Yigal Pinchas, 2006) . At this age, muscle size, strength and power are lost easily after 6 weeks of total rest so maintenance exercises is a must so as to conserve progress. Adolescent strength training can improve the athletic performance in sports such as American football where strength and size of body matters. Despite theories that strength training helps to reduced or stop sport related muscular skeletal injuries in adolescent scientific research have failed to confirm it but recent research suggests that there is a possible reduction in sports-related knee ligament injuries in teenage girls when strength training is combined with plyometric exercises. (Pediatrics, 2008) The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) use by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has estimated from year 1991 to 1996 that 20 940 to 26 120 injuries happened annually in individual less than 21 years old. Data collected from NEISS and other studies reported that 40 to 70 percent of the injuries were from muscle strain and most muscle strain occurred in lumbar back area. More are them are tempted these days to engage in weight training and prefer to go in low services gym as they don’t have enough money, common problem in these gym are they are not supervised and adolescents want rapid results where they lift weight without learning the proper lifting techniques and often exaggerate on weight size to gain muscle quickly which most of the time lead to serious injuries such as back problems.
Most of the adult that come to work out in gym do so to keep fit as they have come to accept that exercises is necessary to have a sound physical and mental health. At this stage the body is fully developed and ready to accept complex training, increased load, frequencies and duration of exercises (Yigal Pinchas, 2006). With most people working in offices these days and health problem such as overweight and cardiovascular problem at their doorsteps, physical activity has become very important these days. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about 600,000 people died of heart disease each year in the US, in Mauritius, concern is rising about heart diseases when diabetic and obesity which always leads to heart problem is on the rise (CDC, 2013). Since 1987, Mauritius has recorded an increase of 60 % of diabetic among adult. Nearly half of Mauritian between the age of 25 to 74 is either diabetic or pre-diabetic (Mauritius News Team, 2010). Weight training is one of the solutions to the problem as it can reduce fat by increasing the metabolic rate of the body on short and long term. This is due to the fact that weight training builds lean muscle which metabolise fat in the body to grow. But weight training can also cause injuries if done carelessly. According to data collected from 100 emergency departments, men were more injured than women from weight training exercises (82.3%). This may be due to the fact that more men lift weight than women. Most of the injuries happened due to free weight (90.4%) and most of these injuries happened when the users drop the free weight on themselves or hit themselves by mistakes while using it (65.5%). The upper trunk and lower trunk were the most injured body part on men with 25.3% and 19.7% respectively. The most common diagnostic resulting from these injuries was sprain and strain with 46.1%. Women suffered more from foot injuries and fractures than men. (Zachary Y. Kerr et al, 2010).
At this age where muscle loss and other illness such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases happens gradually with ageing, physical activity is a must in order to keep the body fit and away from these illness. At this age working out using weight is a good way to increase muscle mass and reduce fats in the body while in the same time increase bone density to combat some of the osteoporosis and loss of balance due to weakened muscle. Exercises should be supervise by a qualified instructor as frequency, intensity, number of repetition, duration of the exercises and type of exercises would be different from those of the other age group. Senior should always consult a doctor before doing any form of exercises due to the fact that most of the time they have orthopaedic issues such as joint problem and cardiac problem and special type of exercises should be designed for them to eliminate any exercises that can pose a health risk. Senior should visit gym 3 times weekly to gain adequate strength and a rest time of 48 hours between sessions. Exercises should be design so as all muscle groups and joints are trained equally per week, duration of session should be at least 20 minutes but no more than 45 minutes. When progress in strength is seen, repetition or weight should be added in each exercise. But due to orthopaedic and cardiac problem, weight addition could be a problem so other factors like repetition could compensate this problem (Darryn S. Willoughby, 2009). According to statistic, the number of injuries among old people is on the rise. Most of the injuries happen while they used weight training machine. The most common injuries were overexertion and while doing exercises that involve pulling and lifting exercises.
To understand how these different types of injuries occur and how to prevent them, we must understand how the human body work.
Anatomy of the spine
The spine is a column comprising of different material namely bones, tendons, ligaments, muscles, cartilages and nerves all assemble together to form a very strong yet flexible structure in areas such as the neck and lower back.

Lumbar spine:
The lumbar spine is in the lower back area where the 5 last vertebrae the L1 to L5 bones are found like seen in the picture above. The vertebrae are the 33 bones in the shape of a disc that connects together to form the vertebral column, the vertebra has a hole in the middle where the spinal cord passes through and so acts as a protection and support. The lumbar spine bears the load of the body and absorbs any stress from movement such as lifting or carrying heavy objects. This is why the vertebra bones are bigger in this area.
Intervertebral discs
Each vertebra sits and is separated by an intervertebral disc and prevents the rubbing of these bones. The intervetebral disc has 2 layers the outer ring called the annulus and the inner ring called nucleus. The annulus is made of fibres bands criss-crossing each other and attaches both the upper and lower vertebrae together. The nucleus, the inner ring is filled with a gel like substance called the nucleus and act as a cushion between both vertebra. The intervetebral disc function like coil spring where the annulus compress both vertebrae together and the nucleus being and uncompressible liquid push the vertebrae away so a gap between both vertebrae is formed. This gap allows the nucleus being uncompressible to work like a ball bearing where the vertebrae roll on it and so making the vertebral column flexible. With age, the intervertebral disc loses progressively the ability to absorb the liquid making the nucleus and so it becomes flatter and brittle resulting in loss of height (Tonya Hines, 2013)

Why back injuries occur?
Most of the time, back pain injuries occur due to injuries and degeneration of the intervertebral discs. Degeneration happens due to wear and tear of the intervertebral discs while doing movement such lifting heavy weight, bending over which put stress on the disc. While doing these movements, compression of the intervertebral disc happens and can move the disc toward the spinal cord and surrounding nerve. This displacement results in the compression of the spinal nerve and put strain on nearby ligaments which causes the back pain.
