Topic, Thesis and Proposal
Topic: There is a link between Hip Hop culture and sexism in culture and practice in
the United States.
Thesis: Hip Hop culture and sexism are connected in the American society; in a
manner that the culture tends to have a sordid relationship with women, for male
artists usually dominate the industry.
Proposal: Hip Hop culture, especially Gangsta rap, through its popularity, rappers
gained the freedom to express their feelings towards drugs, sex, prostitution, and thug
life. Through this, Hip Hop is facing many accusations for promoting not only
violation of laws but also sexism through its practice.
Hip Hop music is one that faces this problem of ridiculing women. Women are
objectified, exploited, and victimized in their content leading to the problem of
misogyny. Hip Hop male artists promote sexism by using misogynistic lyrics and
portrayal of women to demonstrate their masculinity and authenticity. It is clear that
Hip Hop music is a product of the mainstream culture that promotes the
internalization of the negative attitude of stereotyping women.
On the contrary, we cannot overlook the fact that Hip Hop culture has also
provided a potent platform to many young people to create art that reflects the reality
of their lives and the social problems they face in society. Overall, there is a need to
change this notion of rap music promoting sexism so that the content can now focus
on enhancing positive social awareness among young people in the United States.
