When facing a conflict in the workplace, we
often begin the conversation by accusing another person. This commonly is done
using evaluative “you” language. The first step of the PUGSS model tells us to
describe the problem, rather than evaluate. Rephrase each of the following
statements from “you” (evaluative) to “I” (descriptive) statements:
a. “You’re irresponsible! Why can’t you
figure out how to get to work on time?”
b. “You really need to deal with your
attitude problem. I’m tired of it.”
c. “You’re sexist. Women feel uncomfortable
working with you.”
d. “You’re lazy. I work five times harder
than you!”
