A Review Of Potential As A Prospective Manager In Hospitality Industry

I. A Review of own Potential as a Prospective Manager

Managers play an important role in every industry but as I have interest in hospitality management, and I want to become manager in hospitality industry, thus, I am putting particular emphasis in this industry. Managers in this industry are found to be responsible for recruiting as well as training the new comers, monitoring employees, managing hospitality budget, preserving statistical as well as financial records, planning the maintenance works, events or room bookings (Bell and Goldsmith 2013). Moreover, managers are also found to be responsible for handling complaints and quires of the customers along with upgrading and marketing the business and lastly, safeguarding compliance with health and safety legislations as well as licensing laws (Block 2016). Thus, a lot of skills as well as potentials are needed to become a manager. My education qualification is that I am BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Hospitality Management. Apart from this, I have certificates of doing internship in different hotels, which I think can be useful for some larger hotel chains in their general manager positions. As per the hiring requirements of maximum managers in the hospitality industry the minimum qualification, they required are that the applicant must have at least a high school diploma, however, in many other organizations they need years of experiences of working in this particular field. Thus, I have diploma as well as internship experience, which is think, will be beneficial in the end.

As per the feedback, I have got from my friends, family and close associates as well as my own observation on myself says that I do have certain potentialities, which can guide me to become a prospective manager. The very first skills that I consider in myself are that I am a good organizer. This I am so sure of because from my personal experience of working in team projects I have observed that I am good at organizing groups as well as executing processes along with assisting and outlining what is expected to be done. Then I have seen that with mild stress I am very much capable to producing good quality work. Mild stress is mainly produced by deadlines in between which I need to complete the assigned work. Thus, I think I have this skill of time management as well where I can manage the time of the people working with me along with my own so that the work can be completed within the deadline. Next is my communication and interpersonal skill, which I think I am good. I like interacting with new people and can empathetically can encourage and motivate people to stay focused.  The communication and interpersonal skill I think can help me in taking up the responsibility of a manager in the hospitality industry as I can work closely with people and can assign them work based on their capabilities and comfort zone. My friends always say that I am a good listener as they always come up to me with their problems and maximum of time they have got valuable advices which have really helped them. Therefore, as a manager, I will be there to listen to my team or other employees and can guide them to solve the issue, which they will face. Communication is important for managers and I have seen that I am capable of keeping a clear communication with everyone. Apart from this, I feel the most important skill that I am born with is my leadership skill. In the internship days, as well when I am working in groups I have found that I am very much successful in making the group follow my direction. I believe in leading by example and thus, if am doing something right then I would expect my team or followers to follow me by keeping the trust and faith in myself. Apart from all these, I felt I am capable of doing one more thing and that is problem solving. In any field problems will arise which needs to be solved as quickly as possible. I have faced with many problems in my career as well as in my personal life and I have seen that I am calm and focused while dealing with the problems. Thus, from my personal experience I have seen that whenever I have been encountered with problems I am very quick at solving them effectively. I like gathering a lot of information as well as knowledge regarding hospitality industry and thus, I feel this helps me reach to appropriate solutions in less time.

II. Career Development Plan

Before making the career development plan, I would like to talk about certain weaknesses that I think I has for which I need to develop a career plan so that I can work on them taking the next 1year time. The very first drawback in me is multitasking. In any industry, multitasking is important for managers as well as other employees. However, I feel I need time when to adjust and be involved with a task when I am multitasking and it affects my task quality. Another weakness which is I have observed is that I am easily manipulated as I cannot say ‘No’ to anyone. I feel this is a big weakness because many people take advantage of this. Then followed by these another weakness is confidence. Confidence is the key to success among to the present managers. Nevertheless, I feel in many instances I lack that confidence in me like at times of decision making or at times of multitasking. Then comes another major drawback that is faced by me at the time of decision-making. This mainly occurs because I feel that I lack adequate knowledge about the situation as well as regarding the problems. I was never so much into reading thus; I think I have limited knowledge regarding everything. Lastly, the two important skills, which is another weakness, is language and technological skills, which I think, will need some time to develop. In this hospitality industry or in any other workplace business language is very much important to deal with the clients as well as the employees in the daily basis. Due to globalization, organizations are welcoming diversity with open arms, thus, language skills must be developed to deal with these challenging situations. On the other hand, with the developing technologies in every industry today technology plays an important role. Thus, having a thorough technological skills are important to excel in today’s work environment. This will help to perform specialize tasks and will help in effective communication with the line workers as well as to coordinate efforts.

· Multitasking may come in the way of memory thus, what happened throughout the day must be reviewed so that the information is retained.

For stopping oneself from being manipulated-

· ‘No’ must be said firmly. If this can be said then while maintaining a stable relationship with the colleagues, I can stand my ground.

· Listen to the people who are the manipulators but then I must go the thinks that I is good for me as well as for the organization.
