Kerzner Chapter 1 Learning include, The different ways of classifying a project. In this unit, I have learnt the different ways of classifying a project. A project can generally be classified or grouped according to some pre determined functionality. Kerzner, H., & Kerzner, H. R. Egelstaff (2013) Academic assignments: Critical thinking and writing critically Learning includes Assessing Readiness for Implementing Organisational PM (Kerzner, 2013) In this unit, I learnt about the responsibilities of a senior project manager of a particular team. Senior project manager is responsible for planning the different phases of project implementation and is responsible for monitoring the project progress.  I think that in case of project management, the functional managers are capable of making a good project manager as well since they have a clear idea about the outcome of the project and their consequences. Journals & Standards Critical Success Factors of project success (Week 5 lecture slides) One of the critical success factors of the project is proper monitoring of the project progress. Although the project manager is responsible for tracking the project progress, the program manager can look over the shoulder of project manager to ensure that the project is implemented according to the set schedule. It does not depend on the priority of the project.

Although it transfers the power from line manager to the project manager, it is essential to understand that it was not designed to transfer the power but to manage a project more efficiently. Text books and tutorials Organizational Structure (Week 5 lecture slides and tutorial) The different types of organizational structure include functional, divisional, process based, matrix based and circular organizational structure.  The personnel working in a project organisational structure should attend seminars atleast once in three months in order to get a better understanding of the same. Yes the frequency definitely depends on the selected organizational for the project.

This week’s learning has helped me in understanding the different processes of classifying a particular project according to the project requirements. The lectures gave an idea about the concept and importance of organizational change along with a clear idea of organizational structure. This week’s lectures have further helped me in understanding the role of project manager and the senior project managers in handling a project.

Project Management Lecture slides of week 6 The project manager should provide a complete list project requirements and the goals that the project is expected to address.

It is the responsibility of the project managers that the project is implemented according to the set goal and is to be implemented in such a way that the project returns a considerable amount of profit. The project manager is not only responsible for managing the project but also responsible for ensuring that the project returns the maximum profit.

This week’s learning has helped me in understanding the importance of project plan in proper management of a project. The role of project manager is integral in delivering a successful project. The week 6 lecture has helped me in understanding the core concepts of project management and the different responsibilities of the project manager and the top management of the company.

Project Planning and Scheduling Lecture slide Week 7 and tutorials This week’s learning has helped me in understanding the different problems that might arise in development of the project objectives.

Project scheduling is important for proper execution.  The planning steps that should precede the total program scheduling include the feasibility study and the requirements gathering. The different steps associated with project scheduling include evaluation of the project goals, defining the project activities and proper sequencing of the project activities. PMI Implementing Organizational PM Chapter 5 Text book The project manager determines the complexity of the project by evaluating the project requirements.

Proper breakdown of the different project work and the project phases makes the resource allocation easier.

In order to properly develop the first three levels of the work breakdown structure, the functional manager should be responsible for the closely identifying the project requirements.

Journals & Standards Kerzner chapters as indicated I have not faced any such situation when the functional manager is overlooking the project planning.

Portfolio Reflection

The different types of conflicts associated with the project planning phase is associated with the prioritizing of the tasks, administrative procedures, technical opinions about the project and so on.

In my own project, in order to ensure that the project stakeholders have a complete knowledge about the project progress, I developed a project communication plan that is followed by the project team members in communicating the important project progresses.

There are certain defined communication vehicle that is followed by each project team members in order to ensure that the project progress and the important information are properly communicated to the team. Apart from email and phone calls, social media plays an integral role in communication the important project information to the project team. Social media furthermore helps the project stakeholders in getting daily updates about the progress and important project information.

However, regular meetings are an essential part of project communication. This is because, regular meetings help in discussing the issues and concerns associated with a particular project. It is not always possible to ring everyone by phone especially when the team is huge. Conference call is however, a good alternative when a project manager or team members want to communicate to more than one person at a time. Kerzner, H., & Kerzner, H. R. Development of the work breakdown structure of a project includes identification of the different project requirements. These project requirements are scheduled and planned according to the time allocated for completion of the project. Proper understanding of the project requirements is therefore essential in order to develop an accurate work breakdown structure.

The choice of type of Wbs depends on the type of project. For example, in case of very long projects, the time phased WBS is used.

This week’s learning has provided me with a detailed understanding of the importance of work breakdown structure in successful implementation of a project. The learning further gave an understanding of the role of project manager and the functional manager in ensuring project success.

The steps involved in development of a work breakdown structure include understanding of components of the project, determining on how long it will finish each task and checking whether the activity will be completed within the set schedule.

The use of proper project management tools, skills and knowledge help in proper project monitoring.

Senior management is important for a project since they are responsible for tracking and managing the project progress.

During planning the executives are responsible for identifying the different project processes and the tasks that are needed to be implemented for proper implementation of a project.

Journals & Standards Week 8 lecture slides The situation when someone else had owned the situation was a time when one of my first event management projects involved a chaotic situation due to a dispute that had occurred between the team members. The owner was furious, however, I managed the situation by trying to communicate with him and assuring him that the situation will be under control.  There was no politics involved with the situation as it arose due to the difference in opinion of the team members, Tutorials

Kerzner chapters If I have a plan, I personally keep it by tracking the progress of the work and trying to complete the work within a set schedule.

SOW or statement of work defines the work or tasks that are needed to be completed in order to achieve project success.

Configuration management is a process that aims at maintaining the consistency of project performance.

Project management methodology can enhance project planning by defining the process of implementation and handling of the project.

This week’s learning gave an overview of the different concepts of project management including the project specification and work break down structure. It further helped me in understanding the concepts of SOW and configuration management.
