Leadership Development: A 2-Year Plan Based On The GROW Model

Basic Requirements Of Leadership Development Plan

Leadership is a quality and attribute which a leader possesses and use that to lead the followers within an organization (Bargau, 2015; R?ducan & R?ducan, 2014). With the help of leadership skills, a leader influences the team members towards the set of goals and achievement of targets. In this context, the present report is based on dynamic leadership skills of a leader and on the basis of capabilities, a leadership development plan has been prepared for two years. This plan is made in accordance with the GROW (Goal, Reality, Option, Will) model through which a person would ensure the overall development on the basis of set criteria.

Possessing analytical skills are considered the key element for the effectiveness of a successful leader (Grissom & Loeb, 2011). Quality of leadership is helpful to work in a team or to lead the others which can be possible merely with personal capabilities. In this context, my leadership plan will be based on my reflective assessment in which feedback has been given by my partner and associate worker. On the basis of learning outcomes from my partner, I had decided to enhance my current capabilities and leadership skills to obtain more success in my potential career. My plan will be prepared for a maximum of 2 years because the short-time plan is more helpful to boost the leadership capabilities by accepting the challenging task. If I choose long-period of time to develop the leadership skills then there might be possibilities to divert from the goal and future activities. Thus, the selection of 2years development plan is suitable for me to learn new insights and skills for the effective leadership at my current workplace of a pharmacy store. In this regard, Frost (2014) asserted that leadership should involve value-based capabilities which has a contribution to the development of the organizational value system such as a better cultural environment to achieve ultimate success. On the other hand, Puccio, Mance & Murdock (2010) stated that leadership without possessing the values, knowledge and experiences is not better for the organizations because the followers may be mis-leaded towards the task.  Therefore, it shows that leadership skills help the leader to perform effectively by creating long-term relations with other. Moreover, it would be helpful for me to develop a plan so that I will be able to improve my leadership skills beyond which are I am already possessing.  As per my feedback, I realized that a I am not a perfect leader. So, here it is required to develop my capabilities as a leader and to create more transparency with followers.

The GROW model was found in the 1980s by Sir John Whitmore which is known as a successful coaching model because it offers to coach for the development of a person (Whitmore, Bradbury & Johnson, 1992; Grant, 2011). The model consists of four categories, on the basis of which a leader can easily identify the current situation and skills. As per the present situations, future action plan can be prepared. GROW model has a contribution to elicit the inner potential of a leader because it focuses on the different coaching conversation (Carey, Philippon & Cummings, 2011). Moreover, GROW model is known for its success because it offers the opportunity for problem-solving as well as goal setting so that personal development can easily take place in an individual (Grant, Green & Rynsaardt (2010). By considering the significance of GROW model, I decided to apply a theory on my assessment for the development of leadership capabilities so that I can work more efficiently with my team if I again get a chance to perform as a leader.

A brief description of GROW model

With the help of GROW model, it will be suitable for me to incorporate deeper insights and more responsibility towards the team members. Moreover, to achieve more productive results, GROW model provides a chance to develop on personal basis because it involves to focus on interpersonal relations and individual goals.  In this manner, the use of GROW model would be justifiable for me because I will set future goals on the basis of feedback. Hence, I will be able to deliver quality results.

To develop myself as an effective leader, I have decided to attain the following goals for future success-

  • To develop collaborative skills in my personality for better future outcomes
  • To improve the diplomatic skills to deal with conflict situations
  • To be participative but not more lenient towards others

This is a first element of the GROW model in which I will decide my objectives and goal that I desire to develop collaborative skills in my leadership behavior because I was suggested by my partner for the future developments. In this regard, it is required because currently, I am working as a leader of five medical representatives who needed close investigation and assistance for the maximization of sale. In this context, Järvelä & Järvenoja (2011) asserted that a collaborative learning provides a contribution for the self-regulation learning because it is promoted by the internal willingness and that willingness can be directed by motivational factors. By considering this, I would apply collaborative learning in the achievement of my collaborative skills so that I would be able to lead my four medical representatives. Because my decisions will be based on the involvement of the team members; hence, I can boost the morale of myself as well as leading members of the store.

Apart from this, Judd, Kennedy & Cropper (2010) stated that the more positive results can be derived by using the computer-aided software and collaborative game-based learning approach to improve the leadership skills. In this context, I have decided to work on my collaborative skills to lead the employees for a specific task.  Furthermore, I can also apply the collaborative game-based learning theory to integrate all members. Moreover, it is not only raising the learning motivation but also provide the chances of self-efficacy so that a collaborative environment can be built in the organization (Sung & Hwang, 2013). Additionally, my team is associated in different locations and they require a complete guidance for the operation of business activities. Further, I would also use the computer-aided software to instruct the representatives regarding the availability of stock and how to manage the dead stock so that profit will not go down. Therefore, my goal of involvement of collaborative skills can be achieved in a more effective manner and I would be able to enhance the performance of the team.

It is the second element of GROW model which specifies the current situation of an individual that where actually he is lying. On the basis of assessment and reflection, it has been recognized that I am possessing five types of skills including relator, advisor, restorative and consistency etc. which are helpful to lead the entire team in a right direction. Although, as per the reflective criteria, I am not possessing the diplomatic capabilities which creates the issues for me in managing the teams. These are the loopholes in my leadership ability which limits my knowledge area because in absence of diplomatic skills the situation of cold war may be arises among leaders and members.  It is a real situation of mine that I am unable to handle the situation when my team members face the condition of conflicts. Here, I was suggested by my partner to incorporate the ability of diplomacy so that no one can be upset in my team by my deeds and decisions. In this regard, few studies revealed that diplomatic skills are required to create more analytical leaders in the region to deal with the complex situations without harming the feelings of team members (Envall, 2015; Greenstein, 2012). Hence, the involvement of diplomatic leadership skill has a major contribution to lead the people without any interruption because it focuses on the fairness of all people instead of limited to knowns.

Application of GROW model for the personal development

For example, Hillary Clinton is a democratic leader in the American politician. She is the first lady who was appointed as a leader in democracy and working for the advancement of public. Moreover, she fought for a long time to establish a favorable environment education system and focusing on the standard curriculum for teachers as well as students. Hence, she is getting success in her political career (Ranker.com, 2018). By considering the skill of diplomacy, I would be able to deliver more analytical results in my future because it will improve my leadership skills. Further, on the basis of comparison, it would be easy for me to compare with other leaders.  Apart from this, I would work on my diplomatic skills for 3-4 months so that I would be able to understand all five representatives of a store because diplomatic leadership requires more time to understand the team members and derive the outcomes for positivity.

After knowing the results between past and present taken actions, I would be able to do the critical analysis on my leadership skills that what should I do for better performance in front of the team. Here, as per the reality and demanded skills, it would be suitable for me to incorporate alternatives in my leadership capabilities for the development. Further, I will be able to use different strategies and approaches to get success in my leadership journey such as distributed, transparent and discourse leadership etc. (Fakinlede, 2014). In this context, Mabey (2013) mentioned that distributed leadership has a participation in the development of relationships among the members and leader because it focuses on creating a bridge between cultural differences in different aspects. Further, it would also be helpful to lead the different teams in an aligned form so that actually decided results can be derived (Murambiwa, 2014). However, as per the reflective assessment feedback, I suggested by my partner that I should limit my relations with team members.

Additionally, in my feedback I got that I should not please everyone around me otherwise it will create problems for me to manage them and results may suffer. In this regard, I would focus on to maintain the long-term relations with different people of my team so that quality may not hamper. For example, I would adopt situational leadership skills to manage the employees in different situations. If my followers are becoming more lenient towards me and not emphasizing on the completion of targets, then I will use an autocratic leadership. In an autocratic style, my followers would not be allowed to entertain themselves; however, they have to follow my instructions strictly and focused towards quality work (Refer table 1).

Apart from this, Lorinkova, Pearsall & Sims (2013) stated that empowering leadership can also be an optional leadership quality to direct the teams for higher performance as well as coordination. By considering the role of empowerment, I would render decision-making rights to members to complete the task on time. In this manner, it would enhance the level of motivation and confidence among the employees by using the decision-making power. . Hence, it shows that empowerment and distributed leadership can be optional strategies for me to stand as an effective leader. By incorporating these skills, my leadership criteria would be developed.

Goal

This is the last stage of the GROW model which specifies that what should be done in future on the basis of derived outcomes. Here, I would prepare an action plan for the achievement of initial goals such as involvement of collaborative skills and self-regulation learning. In this context, for the enhancement of collaborative skills in my leadership development, I would perform step by step such as planning, communicate the plan, monitor, assess and process. Further, it would be supportive for me because my five representatives will be in regular contact with the help of collaboration (refer table 1). The issues will be resolved at a time if any representative is facing.  Here, it is not necessary that a leader possesses all the qualities to perform the better so need to incorporate new skills for the leadership development.

Here, as per the feedback of my partner and proposed action plan, I perceived that I should work on my participative skill to integrate the members because in participative environment employees become close to a leader. Moreover, it would be helpful for me to improve myself in the field of integration. It will also enhance my collaboration skills because through participation I will be able to manage my followers. On the other hand, my confidence level will also be improved due to collaboration because the proper communication would take place through direct interaction. Apart from this, as per my action plan I would focus on the diplomatic skills so that situation of conflicts can be easily handled. For example, if my team is having the issues related to cultural environment and dealing with the interpersonal conflicts then I would handle the issues by diplomatic leadership. In this, I would listen the views of all others and try to resolve the problems by diplomatic answers so that others interest cannot harm. Besides these, on the basis of reality I received a feedback from my partner that I should customize my behavior that not to be too much close with subordinates otherwise it will be difficult for me to develop fruitful outcomes from employees. Hence, I would plan the training sessions to encourage the people as well as enhancement of my leadership skills. Further, employees will be in close interconnectivity although more leniency would not take place. Therefore, I would be upgraded with new skill of diplomacy; ultimately collaboration will also increase.

Conclusion

On the basis of the report, it has been concluded that I can develop the skill of collaborative by considering the collaborative game-based learning theory because it integrates all the members.  Further, I have realized that I am not perfect in all aspects although I am suggested to improve my leadership skills. Moreover, it can also be concluded that diplomatic leadership capability will be more appropriate for me to manage the complex situations. Because it would be helpful to maintain fair relations with others. Apart from this, it has been concluded that transparent leadership has a contribution in my development because it will create clear relations among manager and a leader. At the end, it has also been summarized that if I will work on my feedback assessment criteria then it will have a major role in my personality and leadership development.
